Lutetium 177 treatment

It is a form of radionuclide therapy, which involves the use of radioactive substances to treat cancer. This type of therapy is highly targeted, as it delivers the radiation directly to the cancer cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. This makes it a potentially more effective and less toxic treatment option compared to other forms of therapy.

Lutetium 177 therapy is intended for patients with advanced prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, such as the bones. This type of cancer is known as metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) and is typically treated with hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or other systemic therapies. Lutetium 177 therapy is often used when these treatments are no longer effective, or when the cancer has progressed despite these treatments. In a recent clinical trial, patients with advanced prostate cancer who received Lutetium 177 therapy had significantly longer progression-free survival and overall survival rates compared to patients who received standard therapy.

It is important to note that not all patients with advanced prostate cancer will be candidates for Lutetium 177 therapy, and the decision to use this treatment should be made on a case-by-case basis in consultation with a healthcare provider.

Advantages

One of the advantages of Lutetium 177 therapy is that it can be administered as an outpatient procedure. The treatment involves the injection of the PSMA-targeting molecule linked to Lutetium 177 into the bloodstream. The molecule travels through the bloodstream and accumulates in the prostate cancer cells, where the Lutetium 177 emits beta particles that kill the cancer cells.

Like any form of cancer treatment, Lutetium 177 therapy does have potential side effects. These can include fatigue, nausea, and decreased blood cell counts. However, these side effects are usually mild and temporary.

Costs

The cost of Lutetium 177 therapy can vary significantly depending on the country and the healthcare system in place. Here's a comparison of the approximate costs for Lutetium 177 therapy in the USA, Europe, and Israel:

USA: The cost of Lutetium 177 therapy in the USA can range from $25,000 to $75,000 per treatment, depending on the location and the healthcare provider. This cost may or may not include additional medical expenses such as pre-treatment imaging, lab tests, and follow-up care.

Europe: In countries with a national healthcare system, the cost may be covered by the government or health insurance. In other countries, the cost may be similar to that in the USA, ranging from €20,000 to €60,000 per treatment.

Israel: The cost of Lutetium 177 therapy in Israel is generally lower than in the USA and Europe, ranging from 10,000 to 20,000 USD. This cost may or may not include additional medical expenses such as pre-treatment imaging, lab tests, and follow-up care.

* It's important to note, that most probably the patient will need 3-4 treatment courses, once a month. These prices are approximate and may vary depending on several factors, including the healthcare provider, the location, and the specific circumstances of the patient's treatment. Additionally, healthcare systems and insurance coverage can have a significant impact on the final cost to the patient.
