Ziv Ben Ari

Professor Ziv Ben-Ari is the director of the Institute of Excellence in Liver Diseases at Assuta Medical Center, Tel Aviv, Israel. She received her MD degree with excellence from the Technion, Haifa, Israel and then was a medical resident at Kaplan Medical Center. Later on, she was a fellow for 5 years in Hepatology at the Royal Free Hospital, London. She served as the chairwoman of the Israel association of the study of the liver and is the president of the Israeli liver patient’s association. ֲ She is a full Professor of Medicine at the Sackler School of Medicine, Tel Aviv University. She is a well-known hepatologist nationally and internationally and a widely sought after international lecturer. She is an active member of the American and European Association for the Study of the Liver. She is an associate editorֲ  of several international peer-reviewed medical journals and has published over 204 articles.

The Institute of Excellence in Liver Diseases directed by Prof. Ziv Ben Ari provides at the Assuta Medical Center, a comprehensive outpatient service. The Liver Institute strives for excellence and for consistently providing compassionate, holistic and innovative care. It includes also a day-care facility. The Instituteג€™s strength lies in evaluating and managing patients with all types of liver disease, including fatty liver disease, Hepatitis B, D and C virus infections, alcoholic liver disease, autoimmune, genetic and drug-induced liver disease, liver cirrhosis and its complications (ascites, variceal bleeding, encephalopathy) and primary liver cancer. The Institute is operating in partnership with leading Israeli physicians in invasive radiology, liver surgery, gastroenterology, oncology, transplantation, and pathology.

The Liver Institute is intensively engaged in the non-invasive assessment of the liver injury severity and evaluation of response to treatment using several innovative technologies: 1. The upgraded FibroScanֲ®, that incorporates a complete non-invasive solution for advanced liver disease assessment. Liver fibrosis staging, liver steatosis grading and portal hypertension assessment. 2. MRI PDFF- A magnetic resonance imaging derived proton density fat fraction as a non-invasive, quantitative, and accurate measure of liver fat content. 3. MRE Magnetic Resonance Elastography, the gold standard for diagnosis and staging of liver fibrosis.

For the invasive technologies, the Liver Institute’s physicians are assessing liver injury severity and etiology by a liver biopsy (when required) either percutaneously or transjugular. For advanced liver disease (ascites and variceal bleeding) the TIPS (Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) procedure is considered.

For patients with the metabolic syndrome and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD); A holistic and tailored approach is implemented where the new drugs [Ozempicֲ® (semaglutide)], or bariatric surgery or bariatric endoscopy are considered.

For patients with primary liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma) the treatment approach is tailored individually according to the stage of the disease. Among others we offer: liver surgery performed by our best liver surgeons, local treatment with thermal ablation, TACE (Transarterial chemoembolization) and TARE (transarterial radioembolization). Systemic immunotherapy therapy with the new checkpoint inhibitors (anti-PD-1/PD-L1) are considered for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.

For patients with Hepatitis C curative therapies are recommended (Epclusa & Maviret).
